When figuring out which assay to use to accurately detect infectious disease pathogens, there are a few considerations:
- How labor intensive is this method? Can it be automated?
- What is the turnaround time from testing to patient reporting?
- How much does it cost?
- How reliably, specifically, and sensitively can this method detect pathogens?
- How broad is the scope of this method, i.e., can it detect almost all pathogens, including atypical ones or those with antibiotic resistance?
