Digital pathology took a step toward broader adoption this week as Tempus AI, Yale New Haven Hospital (YNHH), and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK) announced the formation of the Digital Pathology IMS Open-Source Consortium, an initiative designed to develop a clinical-grade, open-source platform for digital pathology image management, case review, and artificial intelligence deployment.
The consortium seeks to increase the availability of an interoperable software infrastructure that laboratories can deploy and customize without relying exclusively on proprietary platforms.
As part of the effort, Tempus will open source components of the former Paige Image Management System (IMS), including the FullFocus slide viewer, FullFolio case management platform, and AI orchestration and integration modules. The software will serve as a foundation that participating institutions and industry partners can build upon.
For pathology laboratories, the announcement could help lower barriers to digital pathology adoption by providing greater access to a clinical-grade baseline platform capable of supporting whole-slide image viewing, workflow management, and AI-enabled applications. Open-source tools may be particularly attractive to academic medical centers and health systems seeking greater flexibility when integrating digital pathology into existing laboratory operations.
Open ecosystem aims to expand AI adoption
The consortium's founding academic members, YNHH and MSK, will help establish governance, technical priorities, and strategic direction for the initiative. Organizers said additional members are expected to join over time.
“Pathology is entering a transformative new era,” said Razik Yousfi, senior vice president and general manager of AI products at Tempus, in a statement. “Advances in deep learning and AI foundation models are enabling digital pathology to generate powerful insights directly from whole slide images, from cancer detection to molecular profiling.”
MSK researcher Saad Nadeem, PhD, noted that digital pathology currently lacks widely available open-source clinical-grade solutions for slide viewing, case management, and AI deployment. He said the initiative could help organizations develop, validate, and deploy AI applications using more standardized workflows.
The effort comes as pathology departments continue expanding digital pathology programs beyond primary diagnosis into research, biomarker discovery, quality assurance, and computational pathology applications.
Laboratory leaders will be watching closely to determine whether the consortium can help accelerate industry-wide standardization and make digital pathology technologies more accessible across diverse healthcare settings.
According to the organizations, the consortium will operate independently from Tempus' commercial digital pathology offerings, allowing the open-source initiative to evolve through collaboration among participating academic and industry partners.
