Clinical Lab Quality and Performance Improvement
Definitions, tools, and strategies for achieving and sustaining lab quality
Ensuring the accuracy of patient results requires maintaining laboratory quality. Based on her more than 20 years of experience in laboratory medicine, Nancy Ross, MS, MT(ASCP), CQIA, CMQ/OE, CLC, presented at our 2022 Digital Forum about how to operationalize and achieve clinical lab quality and performance improvement.
Ross’s interest in laboratory quality began early in her career when she served as a laboratory technician in the U.S. Navy and was asked to assist with the quality assurance in preparation for the laboratory’s first College of American Pathologists (CAP) inspection. Since then, she has thought deeply about what defines laboratory quality, how can you achieve it, and most importantly, how a clinical lab can sustain it.
Ross addresses these big questions and more in her presentation, including the following:
- Establishing a definition for “laboratory quality,” with the goal of ensuring accurate lab results to best inform clinical decision-making
- Sharing tools for managers to keep track of quality indicators
- Providing a simple framework for driving performance improvement initiatives in the laboratory
- Discussing ideas for inculcating a lab culture around quality
